Britische Grenzer haben einen Klimaschutzaktivisten auf der Basis von Anti-Terror-Gesetzen auf seiner Reise nach Dänemark gestoppt, wo er an Veranstaltungen zum bevorstehenden UN-Klimagipfel im Dezember teilnehmen wollte. Wie der britische Guardian am Mittwoch berichtete, befürchtet der 31-jährige Chris Kitchen, dass dies erst der Anfang der Repressionen gegen Umweltschutzaktivisten darstellen könnte – tausende von ihnen aus ganz Europa werden zu dem Gipfel in Kopenhagen erwartet.

Wie Kitchen berichtet, wurde er am Montag gegen 17 Uhr von Grenzbeamten am Folkestone Terminal des Kanaltunnels an der Weiterreise gehindert.

Das Never Trust A COP Netzwerk (NTAC) wurde im April 2009 gegründet, um soziale Kämpfe und Klimaaktivismus mit einem antikapitalistischen Hintergrund zu verbinden und dazu gegen den COP15 zu mobilisieren.

Police have carried out what is thought to be the biggest pre-emptive raid on environmental campaigners in UK history, arresting 114 people believed to be planning direct action at a coal-fired power station.

The arrests - for conspiracy to commit criminal damage and aggravated trespass - come amid growing concern among campaigners about increased police surveillance and groups being infiltrated by informers.

One of the biggest political spectacles of the coming year will be held in Copenhagen, (COP-15) in December. There, delegates from 170 countries, corporate lobbyists and NGO representatives will come together under the banner of the United Nations framework convention on climate change (UNFCC) in an attempt to solve the problem of climate change via the implementation of a global, market based, carbon cap and trade scheme. The deal brokered here will replace the Kyoto treaty which will expire in 2012. The COP-15 will be a core global governance mechanism through which climate change mitigation will be implemented. The deal that emerges from this has the potential to affect the entire socio-ecological field.

Bei Aktionen im Rahmen des Antirassismus- und Klimacamps in Hamburg im Sommer 2008 sind zahlreiche Menschen gegen die flüchtlingsfeindliche und klimazerstörende Politik des Senats auf die Straße gegangen. Statt diese Politik zu ändern, geht der Senat jetzt mit allen juristischen Mitteln gegen diese Menschen vor: Wegen einer durch die Polizei rechtswidrig aufgelösten Kundgebung vor dem Kraftwerk Moorburg erhalten die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer systematisch Bußgeldbescheide. Gegen einen Sprecher der Klimacamps erstattete die Polizei gar Anzeige wegen Widerstands gegen Vollstreckungsbeamte.

On the tracks to real change.

In September 08 we met in Copenhagen. From more than 22 countries we stood united because the world need more change than the COP15 Climate Summit is likely to bring. And international movement of climate activists, marginalized and indigenous people, fishers, farmers and concerned souls from all over the world united behind a Call to Action against the system of global exploitation responsible for the Climate Change we’re already experiencing.

For months we’ve been brewing and building up strength. In Poznan and at several other gatherings people have met and spread our thoughts and ideas. Tons of practical processes have been started. Now its time to unite our efforts towards a common goal. Decide how we, the people of the world, will approach COP15 climate summit.

At last November’s NUM convened conference, trade unionists and Climate Campers were invited to debate the explosive cocktail of (clean) coal, class and climate change. John Cunningham reports on the frustrating attempts to find a middle ground

This year’s camp at Kingsnorth in Kent against the opening of a new coal fired power station produced a range of predictable responses, from the inanity of the Guardian's suggestion that it was yet another alternative lifestyle festival, to the over zealous attentions of the security state. One of the more interesting responses was from long standing anarchist activist and ex-National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) official Dave Douglass. In a polemic against the camp, he addressed the anti-coal bias of the Climate Campers alongside a perceived lack of class analysis within the camp and the wider green movement. There is undoubtedly a feel good anti-capitalism implicit in much of the discourse around climate camp that can exclude any consideration of class in favour of blandly utopian sentiment. For instance, in the Climate Camp Newspaper statements such as ‘Sometimes it feels as though our world is coloured in sadness. And you just want to be somewhere else…’ i read less like a detournement of advertising copy than a self help approach to political activism, the ‘middle class voice’ that Douglass characteristically claimed Climate Camp spoke in.

This statement is our assessment of the Conference of Parties (COP) 14, and articulates our principles for achieving climate justice.

1. The current world economic crisis marks the end of the neoliberal phase of capitalism. 'Business as usual' (financialisation, deregulation, privatisation…) is thus no longer an option: new spaces of accumulation and types of political regulation will need to be found by governments and corporations to keep capitalism going

Um den Klimaaktionstag am 06. Dezember werden wir in diversen Städten Luxusautos lahmlegen, die mehr als 250 g CO2 pro km verbrauchen und damit überdurchschnittlich zum Klimawandel beitragen. Wir wollen weder bleibende Schäden anrichten noch Menschen gefährden. Stattdessen werden wir den Klimakillern die Luft aus den Reifen lassen.

Die Verbrennung fossiler Rohstoffe trägt zu mehr als 60 Prozent zum globalen CO2-Ausstoß bei. Einen wesentlichen Anteil davon machen Erdöl und Erdölprodukte aus - beispielsweise in Verbrennungsmotoren von PKWs. Diese Emissionen werden vor allem in den reichen Industriestaaten verursacht: So gab es in den vier deutschen Bundesländern Nordrhein-Westfalen, Bayern, Baden-Württemberg und Sachsen 2005 mehr PKW als in Indien und China.

Opportunities for media interviews

Up to now, UNFCCC (United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change) has been more about opening business opportunities for so-called green economy than about really reducing carbon emissions. Agrofuel, carbon-trading and climate-ready seeds are only examples how climate negotiations are misused to facilitate the take-over of natural resources to the benefit of corporations. Both people and climate are affected by these false solutions.

Danish governments plan to support countersummit with money taken from Development Aid.

The Peoples Climate Action is an NGO-based network dedicated to host a countersummit in Copenhagen during the COP15 summit. Since spring this year they’ve been negotiating with the Danish government about coordination, locations and funding of such event.. The Climate Forum have argued that the government should help pay for activities open for the general populace and grassroots to meet up. So far the government have responded with denial of responsability or by stalling until the annual budget had been negotiated in Parliament.

Police have warned of the growing threat of eco-terrorism after revealing they are investigating a group which has supporters who believe that reducing the Earth's population by four-fifths will help to protect the planet.

Officers from a specialist unit dedicated to tackling domestic terrorism are monitoring an eco-movement called Earth First! which has advocates who state that cutting the Earth's population by 80 per cent will ease pressure on other species. Officers are concerned a 'lone maverick' eco-extremist may attempt a terrorist attack aimed at killing large numbers of Britons.

When a Scottish farmer applied for planning permission to build four wind turbines in a field this year, his plans were almost derailed by Aberdeen airport. The turbines were in line of sight of the airport's radar and could interfere with it, potentially hampering air traffic, the airport said.

Taking advantage of the opportunity of so many people from movements gathering in Beijing during the Asia-Europe People’s Forum, the Transnational Institute and Focus on the Global South convened informal nightly meetings between 13 and 15 October 2008. We took stock of the meaning of the unfolding global economic crisis and the opportunity it presents for us to put into the public domain some of the inspiring and feasible alternatives many of us have been working on for decades. This statement represents the collective outcome of our Beijing nights. We, the initial signatories, mean this to be a contribution towards efforts to formulate proposals around which our movements can organise as the basis for a radically different kind of political and economic order.

Kein Friede mit der NATO!

Anfang April 2009 feiert die Nato sich selbst. Da wollen wir nicht fehlen! Mit einer starken internationalen Mobilisierung werden wir den KriegsstrategInnen das Fest versalzen. Es ist kein Zufall, dass der Jubiläumsgipfel in Deutschland und Frankreich stattfindet, denn die EU beansprucht innerhalb der NATO zunehmend eine Führungsrolle. Im Wandel der globalen Sicherheitsarchitektur und des militärischen Krisenmanagements sehen EU-StrategInnen ihre Chance, als „soziale“ Vermittler und „demokratische“ Intervenierer in Krisenregionen. Denn um ihre politischen und ökonomischen Interessen global durchzusetzen, braucht die EU eine eigenständige Militärpolitik.
Wir wollen mit der Mobilisierung gegen die NATO und gegen die EU-Politik auch an die G8-Mobilisierung 2007 in Heiligendamm erinnern, die gezeigt hat, wie im Zusammenwirken themen- und spektrenübergreifender Kräfte überraschend und wirksam die Treffen der Mächtigen gestört werden können.

Seit einiger Zeit reden nicht allein nur Umweltschützer über das Wetter bzw. das Klima, mittlerweile haben auch Politiker und seit neuem auch Militärs das Thema für sich entdeckt. So beschäftigte sich der UN-Sicherheitsrat im April 2007 erstmals mit den “Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf den Frieden und die Sicherheit.”¹ Selbst in den Vereinigten Staaten, wo eigentlich versucht wird, das Phänomen grundsätzlich zu verleugnen, fordern mittlerweile prominent besetzte Kommissionen, die sicherheitspolitischen Folgen des Klimawandels stärker zu beachten.² Inzwischen verpflichtete der US-Kongress die Regierung sogar darauf, den Auswirkungen der Erderwärmung in allen relevanten Sicherheitsdokumenten eine hohe Priorität einzuräumen.³

In the last twenty years, climate change and its potential and real impacts have become more and more obvious. This is due to the results of scientific research but also to environmental movements, media, critical intellectuals, progressive state officials and alternative energy producers who have focussed social and political attention on the implications of the problem. With the Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC) and its Kyoto Protocol, an international political mechanism was developed in the 1990s.

Planka.nu was founded in the autumn of 2001 after the hot spring and summer of the Swedish EU-presidency, which culminated in the big demonstrations and riots in Gothenburg. During this time many activists became increasingly aware of the struggles in their everyday life, instead of focusing merely on mobilization to protest against international summits.
