Lawyers call for criminal investigation into G20 takedown

Kate Allen

The lawyers of a woman who is suing police after claiming she was shot twice with rubber bullets while peacefully protesting during the G20 summit are now calling for a criminal investigation into her takedown and arrest.

Natalie Gray in September sued the Toronto Police Services Board and 10 unidentified officers who were involved in the incident. Police filed a statement of defence last week, their first for a G20-related lawsuit.

Gray’s lawyers, Clayton Ruby and Brian Shiller, believe the defence is overly vague and the police aren’t doing enough to investigate Gray’s claims. At a news conference Friday, Ruby will outline those complaints and push for a criminal investigation.

The Toronto Police Service has presented the federal government with a final tab of $89.2-million for its share of policing last June’s G20 summit, about $55-million under the amount Public Safety Canada was willing to pay the force, Chief Bill Blair told a Police Services Board meeting Thursday.

At the same meeting, however, the chief got an earful from civil libertarians for opting to keep four sound cannons acquired for the summit.

Virtually every category of Toronto police expenditures for the summit came in under budget. Spending on salaries and overtime pay, including for officers seconded from other police forces, ate up by far the largest portion of the budget, at $47.7-million. Other large categories included spending on video and other technology ($7.9-million) and equipment ($6-million).

Toronto artist cleared of explosives, weapons charges from G20 case

Anna Mehler Paperny

Kristen Peterson, a Toronto-based visual artist, has been cleared of charges that she possessed explosives and dangerous weapons along with her computer-programmer husband in connection with last summer’s G20 summit.

Ms. Peterson and her parents are thrilled, said lawyer Brian Heller, following a “traumatizing” months-long legal ordeal that ended in a Toronto courtroom Wednesday, with Crown attorneys declaring they see no realistic prospect of conviction.
